Martin Fotta

is Head of the Department of Mobility and Migration at the Institute of Ethnology, Czech Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on mobility, kinship, economic practices, and racialization and currently follows two main axes. He explores the transformation of Romani identities within the historical and cultural dynamics of the Lusophone Atlantic (https://www.romaniatlantic.cz). Second, he studies the impact of recent wars on Romani communities, specifically examining the experiences of Ukrainian Roma as refugees, particularly in Czechia (https://rocit.pl). His ERC-funded project investigates how Romani kinship relations in Europe and the Middle East serve as resources for navigating war and displacement. He authored or edited several books and articles, including Ethnographic Methods in Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Research: Lessons from a Time of Crisis (Bristol University Press, 2024), co-edited with Paloma Gay y Blasco, and Romani Atlantic, co-edited with Ann Ostendorf, which will be published by Cambridge University Press in 2026.
